No formal educational standard is necessary to obtain an Australian Pilots Licence.
If you are undecided about learning to fly and would like to "test the water first", we suggest you take a Trial Instructional Flight (TIF). This trial flight is an abridged first lesson and only costs $55.00. For about 20-30 minutes you experience the thrill of flying an aircraft and if like most people be completely convinced you want to continue training. In which case, the introductory flight will count towards your private pilot licence training. The TIF puts you under no obligation to continue with further training.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) will allow you to continue flying for some time before requiring you to take out a student pilot licence. A straight forward medical examination is needed and can be conducted by an approved Designated Aviation Medical Examiner who may carry out aviation medical examinations. In Rockhampton one of our Club members is a CASA approved D.A.M.E. and will be happy to help you with your Aviation Medical. He will also assist you with any questions you may have about pre-existing medical conditions or other aspects of Aviation Medicine.

The Student Pilot Licence is issue by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and is required before being able to fly solo.
Everything that you need can be supplied by the Aero Club. All study books, maps and other requirements are readily available. The school recommends the Trevor Thom series Pilot Training Manuals.
We fit in to suit your budget. We cater for all students from full time to those who can only afford to fly every second or third week. We are open seven days and will tailor a programme of training to suit your needs and budget.
Flying training will commence in the basic skills of flying. Initially you will learn to fly in our Cessna 150 VH-RZN. You will learn to take-off and land the aircraft safely in preparation for your first solo..
There are four basic exams which must be completed. These are straight forward multiple choice tests and are not difficult. They are the Pre Solo Exam, Pre Area Solo Exam, Basic Aeronautical Knowledge and the Private Pilot Licence Exam. The Club is now set up to do all "cyber exams" on their dedicated computer. All CASA exams are conducted on-line. There is no additional charge for members of the Aero Club.
Flying training will continue with exercises away from the field preparing you for the GFPT. Once you have passed this stage you are permitted to take passengers with you either in the circuit area or to either of the training areas near Rockhampton.
Navigation flying training will normally be undertaken flying the Cessna 172 however some training must be completed in a Cessna 182. It will give you your cross country experience to complete your training and prepare you for your PPL test. You will see a lot of Central Queensland and land at a variety of airfields.
At the Rockhampton Aero Club we have our own approved Flight Test Examiner, so when you are ready to demonstrate that you are a competent pilot it will be with one of our friendly ATO,s.Once you have obtained your PPL, you may wish to expand your capabilities. We can offer training for a Night Rating and endorsements for a Constant Speed Unit and Retractable Undercarriage and Formation Flying. We can also train you for a Commercial Pilot Licence if you wish to make flying a career.
| The
following costs reflect the minimum hours required by the Civil Aviation
Safety Authority. We find however, that most students do require a few more hours of flying to reach the standard required for the flight test. Due to constantly changing fuel prices and landing fees, the Rockhampton Aero Club reserves the right the change these prices without notice. |
