Command Instrument Rating
Learn how to fly through clouds, weather, rain and at night, all like a professional pilot should. With over 34 hours of training, we will teach you all the necessary skills to operate an aircraft around and through all types of weather and arrive at aerodromes using the NDB, VOR, DME, GPS and/or RNAV. Our Command Instrument Rating training is highly regarded in the aviation industry and will make you a better pilot.
The Rockhampton Aero Club is fully accredited by CASA to conduct training and testing for the issue of a Private IFR or Command Instrument Rating. With a testing officer on staff, booking is not a problem and we are able to undertake all training and testing in four weeks.
Training for the Command Instrument Rating generally entails 17 hours in the simulator, 5 hours in a single-engine aircraft and 12.5 hours in a twin-engine aircraft.

What does a Command Instrument Rating entail?
Our Multi Engine Command Instrument Rating (CIR) course starts off with navigation aid work in our advanced synthetic
trainer where you learn all about the navaids you will be using and operation of the aircraft. You will learn about sector entries, holding patterns, approaches and cross-country navigation before stepping foot in an aircraft, allowing you to improve your skills at a fraction of the price of operating an aircraft.
From completion of the synthetic trainer component, you will step into our IFR Cessna 172 to put those skills into use in an aircraft. Flying around the local airports, you will fly IFR the entire way and conduct arrivals and approaches at each airport over two separate navigation exercises.
If you choose to complete a Multi-engine CIR and have not flown a Multi-engine aircraft before, we will stop the IFR training here and complete some basic training in our Partenavia P68C. If you have another Multi-engine endorsement, but not a Partenavia endorsement, you may only require a short flight to cover the basic operational knowledge required for the remainder of the IFR training before conti
nuing on with the IFR navigational sequences.
Completing a minimum of four additional navigation exercises in the aircraft, you will learn how to handle remote flying, regional airports, bad weather and of course lots of IFR flying! As we undertake the flying component, we will also develop your knowledge of IFR flying, rules and regulations and of course your knowledge deficiency report from the Instrument Rating Exam (IREX).
You will require some night experience in order to undertake the flight test, otherwise we will conduct night flying prior to the test day, usually as part of the regular IFR sequences.
On test day you will be assessed on your knowledge of IFR flying, rules and regulations etc, plus your understanding of the aircraft and its performance. You will then demonstrate your abilities to our Chief Pilot over a 2 - 3 hour flight test, which at the successful completion of, you will be issued with a Command Instrument Rating on the spot.
